I started my career as a journalist and for many years, I worked as a communicator, writer, editor, public relations specialist, and creative project manager at research universities and institutes focused on technology and various scientific fields. I have also consulted with technology startups on marketing, public relations, and general outreach.

I ran the communications team for a technology research center at UNC-Chapel Hill called the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI). I launched the RENCI brand, oversaw development of its website and social media, handled media relations and supervised a small but talented staff of communications and design professionals.

I started at NCSA as the public information officer and became director of a group of nine communications professionals in 2003. I wrote long-form science feature stories for NCSA's award-winning magazine, handled all PR, managed the production of multiple websites and also wrote web, marketing and blog content.
